Ocean / Maya / Arnold

This is an ocean scene that i have created in Maya using Arnold render engine. Below you can see in short the process that goes on behind.

There are many tricks that are used to go around the mega heavy scenes such as this one with thousands of polygons which will be hilarious to think it will run smoothly when it has to be it for a film or a game in special because for movie, you do rendering of it and that’s it, while in a game, the graphic card has to render it in the very same second! That’s immensely heavy task!

That is why in order to create this ocean we are using cameras who are going to take the cache of the small portion of the ocean and duplicate it across the scene, which can be adjusted by how much percentage in each direction and how smooth the transition can be so it will be seamless and natural.

It is a technique that requires lot’s of understanding but once it’s done it is very easy, as pretty much everything else right, but till you get there…

On the photo above you can see that plane looking down, that is the thing that will project the cache that is now memorized on the low poly plane surface below and the results is something that you can see on the photo below

That is cool right? So you see whole ocean and all it’s details, the foam, the tiny waves the currents and all of that, but when in fact all beneath that is just one tiny (in geometry speaking) plane with not more than 300 polygons. Below one animation of it.

Hope you like it.
